It sound like you need to take that headstock apart and clean/lube up all the shafts and sheaves in the drivetrain. Something is binding and putting an unusual load on that motor. And it maybe, just maybe, be in the speed control lol.

I know a method you COULD use is to mount the tubes as you would to clean them, but make sure the support is right next to the cut. When turning, you can steady a hacksaw at the cut mark and slowly "cut" back and forth on that spot as you normally would if the tube weren't spinning. That prevents ...

Excellent question about the way tubes. I've seen pics of folks with a setup on sawhorses, using a hand drill to power the assembly. If on the far sawhorse, you mounted a 2x4 vertically with a clamp, the base piece could easily be attached to it. I'll put up a drawing or pic when I can. I'm at a ...

Having found that bent piece, it would seem almost certain the drivetrain had something bound up somewhere. But that's good, in a way.
