Re: Universal Lathe Tool Rest min spindle length
I got out to the shop yesterday afternoon and did some measuring. It was without the actual Universal Lathe Tool Rest since I have not found it yet since moving. Still too many unorganized boxes of "stuff" around the shop. Using the different Tailstock Centers I have about 2" to 4&quo...

Re: Universal Lathe Tool Rest min spindle length
I would have to measure that too. Since the 10" diameter center disk of the Universal Lathe Tool Rest is wider than the carriage at least some of the upper mounting bracket of the Lift Assist would be under the 10" center Disk.
FYI the column turning video is impressive.

Re: Mark v speed controller problem
Majjr, Welcome to the Shopsmith Forum. I have not had that problem. That is a sealed Bearing and should not need oiling. Over time sealed bearings will "wear" out which does happen. I have to wonder where you are getting your replacements from. Shopsmith only sells it installed in the Floa...

Re: New Owner to 2 Shopsmiths
Ciggy, Welcome to the Shopsmith Forum. Congratulations on the great find. As Ed has already said Tailstocks are all interchangeable. All Mark 5/V's be it a 500, 510/505, 520, 520S, Mark 7 or Mark 4 all use the same Tailstock which has been basically the same since the introduction of the Mark 5 in 1...

Re: Universal Lathe Tool Rest min spindle length
I can't tell you without going out to the shop, mounting my Universal Lathe Tool Rest on my Mark and getting actual measurements. For a little math work the main part to the equation is the center disk measuring 10" in diameter. That's how far apart the Headstock will be from the Tailstock. Sub...

Re: Which Lathe upgrade?
gkillebrew, Welcome to the Shopsmith Forum. Below is a picture of a Lathe Tool Rest Assembly from a Mark V made in March 1982. This is from the original Table System later refered to as the Mark V 500. _ Lathe Tool Rest 03-82.jpg . They have the "threaded" Post and a shorter Arm than the o...

Re: New Owner
This is what that flat spring looks like in position as shown in the picture below. It is the part under the arrow not what the arrow is pointing to. Sorry it's the only picture I could find of it right now.

Re: New Owner
That is a lot of wear on that Gilmer Drive Sleeve Assembly. I don't know why the belt would wear it down so much through normal use even considering its age. If the Bearings are not turning smoothly, they should be replaced. Poorly turning bearings will rob power between the motor and Quill. You may...

At $50 off this is probably the best deal you will find on the Speed Reducer from Shopsmith.

Re: Quill coupler broken - where to source new part?
danielsegge, Welcome to the Shopsmith Forum. As you may have guessed from the posts from other members it makes a difference which drive system your Shopsmith Mark 5 has. Mark 5 Greenies which started in 1954 through Goldies made prior to mid 1961 originally came with the Gilmer Drive while all Mark...
