Re: cleaning and preparing tubes for rebuild.
Like JPG's suggestion I use a 2" ID PVC pipe slightly longer than the Bench Tubes with a cap glued onto one end and a cap that slips onto the other end. This uses about a gallon of liquid to submerse the Way or Bench Tube inside the PVC Pipe. Evaporust is a great remover of rust on metal parts ...

Re: cleaning and preparing tubes for rebuild.
DOWeaver, You said, I remember reading about some chemical that you could use if the rust pits on tubes where deeper than you could sand out. I believe you already know this but others looking for advice may not. Sanding of the Way Tubes is not the best method for rust removal and evening out rust p...

Re: Shopsmith Mark 5 What When and Where
Below is page 26 of the 10:56 Owner's Guide. The nylon collar is A3408 in the exploded view but is B3408 in the parts list. That is what I was referring to.

Note in the close up below it is A3408

Re: Shopsmith Mark 5 What When and Where
John, Thanks for the correction. I must have been going backwards when I found the nylon collar in the 10:56 Manual but not in the 10:55 Manual and stopped there. :o Hopefully others can answer the question did the nylon collar appear then was discontinued only to be included later or was it an erro...

Re: Don’t let this happen to you on your Shopmsith
Scott,
Excellent reminder and showing what can happen if we forget to do all the checks before turning on our Shopsmith. I once started making a cut without the Quill locked. Not something I will forget to do again.

Re: Mark 5 doesn’t start
Since you have followed David's suggestions along with Dusty's lubrication recommendation and none worked, I would suspect there may be bearings that need to be replaced. If the motor is running fine without the belt attached extra strain is coming from somewhere. This will require some headstock di...

Re: Dragged out a shopsmith
RonKlein,
Good point about Floor Wax. It was apparently not the case when the early Mark 5 Manuals were written but I will revise my Model 10E/10ER Owner's Guide addendum. Thank you for pointing that out for any other readers of this thread looking for guidance on what wax to use.

Re: Dragged out a shopsmith
Below is some information on waxing metal parts on the Shopsmith tools from early Owner's Guides. It is a section I add to Owner's Guides of Model 10E and 10ER Shopsmith tools when I sell a restoration. Maintenance: Waxing CAUTION Use paste floor or furniture wax. Do not use car wax or spray furnitu...
