19th century compound dovetails
I have been out of the shop and away from the forum for a while, mainly due to work but also a trip we took to Canada a few weeks ago. Re: First bowl
Exactly. I prepared a square of maple, cut it in half, and glued it back together with a walnut strip in the middle. After it dried I cut it in half again (at 90 degrees) and glued the second walnut strip between those pieces. Then cut the circle out on the band saw. BTW, my biggest problem with the...

If you wouldn't mind sharing a photo (or a link if you've already posted it), I would be interested to see your apple branch box. Thx!charlese wrote:

Re: Dogwood
And here are the first two projects: a tealight holder and a cheese board. Tealight holder.jpg Cheese board.jpg In addition to using my 510 in table saw and drill press mode, I used my Shopsmith OPR to shape the foot of the tealight holder. The grain is more interesting than I had expected. The teal...

Dogwood
Back in July 2015 a long-dead dogwood tree finally toppled over in our yard. There is an old thread in the Community section where I asked for project ideas. I cut the trunk up into sections and let them sit until this past November, when I re-sawed them into boards of various lengths and widths. (S...

Re: First bowl
Thanks, Steve. The bulk of the work was done with carbide tools from Eddie Castelin, with a radius square or round cutter as the situation dictated.swampgator wrote:Really nice job for a first time and combining woods.
Curious as to the gouges you used.

Re: First bowl
Thanks for all the kind comments! It is definitely addicting. Also a bit daunting, especially the first time around. I was fortunate to notice a weak joint while seating it on the chuck before hollowing. Re-glued it and took some additional precautions, and it (and I) survived. To Paul's question: t...
