pear wood

I have a chunk of flowering pear wood, about 3 inch diameter by 18 inch long. It is not seasoned yet. I notice some checking on the two cut ends. Question 1: how should I store this wood? Qestion 2: Can I turn this pear into a wood mallet head? (like for use in a kitchen)

Re: MarkV

Posted late 2015: "Bandsaw tire wArehouse (via eBay) offers USA-made 5/8 arbors specifically for your Mark V model. They are quite a bit more than from SS (about $55) but they have them in stock. Mine arrived in just a couple of days. I tried to order from SS but they were on back order and aft...

SS logo cap

A Woodcraft store downstate is hosting a Mark 7 demo. lf you show up early with a coupon you get a free SS logo cap. Now, considering my caregiver duties and the time to drive over and back, I'd be just as happy to buy the cap. Not in the market for a Mark 7 anyway. Anyone seen these caps for sale e...

Smithsonian

I got a free preview of the Smithsonian Channel on my satellite dish. They publish a magazine and also have a souvenir store. They ran lots of ads for the store. The copy said, "shop Smithsonian dot com..." But the way the announcer read it was "SHOPSMITH Sonian dot com." Every t...

Re: Source For Inexpensive Lathe Chisels?

You can make your own version of Easy wood tools if you can cut a steel bar to length and drill and tap a hole. The carbide cutters themselves are available for a few dollars various places on line. You can find fabricating instructions on YouTube. I did it and my mechanical skills are rudimentary.

Re: Rubber Baby Bumpers

I took a few pictures of the carriage to headstock control rod on my old Mark VII Shopsmith. You can easily see how simple the basic concept is as well as how effective it is. You can loosen the both the headstock to way tube lock and the carriage to way tube lock and slide them from one end or the...

Re: Rubber Baby Bumpers

DoN't the TV and YouTube woodworkers tell us to plan and that all similar cuts should be made before moving the blade or fence? Trying to repeat the set up could be just as imprecise as using a circular saw.
