Re: How hot is hot?

Did a little research and found that there’s a clutch inside the drive sleeve. I’ll probably find a replacement on eBay, if possible Many thoughts from people here. Some are off the mark. In your original post you said the machine starts and runs and after a while it stops and hums. If it runs in t...

Re: How hot is hot?

I got things apart. The motor runs perfectly fine with the gilmer belt and drive removed. I think the drive sleeve is the issue, but the two bearings on the outside are smooth. I don’t fully understand the function, but I think the toothed part of the drive sleeve that the gilmer belt rides on is sl...

Re: How hot is hot?

When the motor hums and won't turn, the problem usually is in either the Capacitor or the centrifugal start switch that puts the capacitor on line for starting. If your capacitor is known good, make sure the start switch is clean and has clean contacts. Thank you. I’m okay at mechanical but not gre...

Re: How hot is hot?

Thank you, Dusty.

I finished a rebuild with new bearings, blew out the motor, and a clean and painted headstock last year.

I will test it with the belt off.

Re: How hot is hot?

Reviving an old thread here. I’ve been running primarily in drill press configuration. Yesterday, my machine stopped turning and was humming. I started thinking capacitor, seized bearing, old motor finally breathing its last. I turned it off immediately. Did some reading, checked my plug breaker. Tu...

Re: '55 Surprise...Starting Restoration

Nothing like resurrecting a 4-year-old thread. Life, work, and a new baby meant this greenie's many pieces sat on shelves in my garage since 2016. I have had a little more time due to the pandemic, so I have been slowly working through unfinished projects. I only have a few more parts to paint and a...

Re: Planer Thickness Lock?

I found an old Nick Engler video on YouTube for cleaning the posts with a file card. Easy enough. I will give that a try and hope for the best.

Thanks for the direction on tension and syncing!

Re: Planer Thickness Lock?

That's helpful, but raises a couple more questions. I will search the forums for synchronizing and chain tension.

Planer Thickness Lock?

Picked up a planer from clist and working on getting it cleaned up. This is my first experience with the SS planer. From what I can tell, the infeed/outfeed table rides up and down on four threaded rods at the corners of the machine which are driven by a chain. The table in my planer will move up ea...
