Pen and/bowl turning
Hi all, I'm trying to decide whether a ShopSmith is going to suit me, or if a dedicated wood lathe is in order. In particular, I'd like to be able to turn pens and bowls. I am a beginner...have turned a few spindles just for fun, but would like to make a few gifts for family. I've seen Youtube video...

Re: Adjusting speed for lathing on a 10ER
Thank you, all. Lining up the belt in a veritcal line makes sense. Very helpful information. 3 speeds. Got it--thank you for your help!
BTW, I believe my SS is still 'all stock'...just don't know what I'm doing

Re: Adjusting speed for lathing on a 10ER
Thanks, Everett--very helpful. Between Dick's help and yours, I know what RPM's i'm looking for, and which pulley to use on the headstock...
But...
Still looking to know which pulley I should be using on the motor.

Re: Adjusting speed for lathing on a 10ER
Thanks for that....a couple of followup questions: 1.) There is no mention of the motor pulley position...only the headstock position. I guess I could assume a middle position (pulley #2) for the motor? 2.) Semi-dumb question: Which is pulley 1, and which is pulley 3? i.e. on the headstock pulley, i...

Adjusting speed for lathing on a 10ER
Hi all- Finally got my replacement tool rest for my 10ER. Hoping to start turning some basic spindles (mostly just for fun) ASAP. I'm having a hard time finding out what combination of pulley positions (or, belt positions) I should use to get the appropriate speed for turning on the 10ER. I was goin...

Re: Need lathe toolrest -- can't find one anywhere!
I have an extra stem with the rest holder on it here at moms, that I told you about last time you asked, I do believe I have a extra tool rest at home, but is 90 miles away. I was home last week and forgot about you and it. My bad. I have your address. I will get the stem and holder out to you this...

Need lathe toolrest -- can't find one anywhere!
Hi everyone- I use a 10ER in my high school design tech class (it is such a fabulous example of mutli-purpose, quality construction, design elements, etc.) and one of my favorite things to use it for is the lathe. However....about a month ago, an off-balance 4x4 (and probably excessive headspeed) ca...

Lathe rest compatibility (10ER vs. Mark V)
Hi all- I've got a 10ER and I miiiiiight have been attempting to turn an old 4x4 fence post, which result in a very 'exciting' ejection of the piece. In its trajectory, it appeared to have encountered the lathe tool rest, which prompty broke just below where the actual rest connects to the cylinder....
