So after scouring local hardware shops, one auto shop (meineke), and and auto store (oreily) I still haven’t found an eclip that is thick enough or even a retaining ring. So I tried to put two e clips in the slot and managed to get both in there. Put in the carriage and tightened and both bent and fell off. Might just have to wait for Shopsmith. Didn’t want to but looks like I have no choice now.

Had a guy say that the e clip is too thin Andy I have to agree. Saw a picture of the original earlier and it’s about 50% thicker than the one I had installed

Thanks guys! And I had a guy I know who works at a fastener company take the rod and fit it himself. Company called Valley Fastener and while I appreciate what he did, it’s entirely too weak for what I needed.

So I tried an eclip like Everett said and it was far too weak to hold the tool rest up and keep it from moving side to side. It even bent and almost broke

Model 500 carriage problem
I need part 164 of the Shopsmith diagram : Model 500, carriage diagram, part number 164. I don’t even know what part this is and my tool rest won’t stay up now.
