Re: Power pro problems and no response from SS

It has been six years since I initially started this thread. I resolved my Shopsmith lathe issues by buying a real lathe (Powermatic 2020) and have immensely enjoyed working with a machine that is well designed and works perfectly every time I turn it on. I still use the SS for bandsaw ,disk sander ...

Re: Power pro problems and no response from SS

Both of my Nova chucks have the "S" adapter, so that isn't the problem. It looks like I will be taking Ed's advice and probably shipping the whole headstock back to Shopsmith. But based on fredshelton's post, who knows how long it will be before I see it again.

Re: Power pro problems and no response from SS

Thanks guys. My 4-jaw chucks are Nova, perhaps I do have the wrong adapter, but this happens to my faceplates too, and they are from Shopsmith. I've tried teflon tape, loctite will be next. I'll wait on the super glue.

My spindle is pretty gnarled up now, the flat has gotten rounded over from ...

Re: Power pro problems and no response from SS

Wow. While I'm saddened that there are others experiencing this, at least I am not losing my mind and this is an actual problem. So what can be done about it? Putting loctite on all the setscrews isn't practical, maybe for that one on the fan but not the ones on my faceplates and chucks.

This is ...

Re: Power pro problems and no response from SS

Was able to get the fan off with a lot of wiggling. Took it to the hardware store and the setscrew size is M5x6 Bought an extra one just in case. Put a drop of blue loctite on it, reassembled the whole thing and fired it up. The rattle is gone! Thanks guys!

The speed sensor was tightly attached so ...

Re: Power pro problems and no response from SS

I don't want to pull the whole motor out and drag it to the store, so I will try the m6x6, but I read on one of these posts that the allen wrench for this screw is 2.5mm. I will bring one of those with me and buy every setscrew that uses this size allen wrench. I will report back.

What do you ...

Re: Power pro problems and no response from SS

Hi Fred,
I finally got a chance to take the cover off the motor and, yes indeed, the fan was loose. In fact, the set screw was missing entirely. Probably vibrated loose, just like every other setscrew on this infernal contraption, came off and got lost.

Would you, or anyone else reading this ...

Re: Power pro problems and no response from SS

Thanks Mike. I did check the belts, about 1/8" deflection on the lower belt and about 1/16" on the upper belt, which I think is about right. But then I took the belt off and ran the motor without it and now I see that the rattling is definitely coming from the motor. It's kind of looking like this ...

Power pro problems and no response from SS

I purchased the Power Pro upgrade for my '80s era Mark V 510 in November 2017, based on all the glowing reviews. I have had nothing but problems with it.
I emailed the Customer Support people in December, SS replied that they would make a ticket out for me and someone would respond. No one ever did ...
