Re: Loose Drive Assembly where Tool Attach

Free play that is in and out, with the quill spindle moving in and out while the quill housing is stationary, is axial free play. Your hand positions in the picture make me think this is what you may be referring to. In my limited experience this was caused by the outer quill bearing both times. Ano...

Re: Double tilt upgrade

The shims are placed against the SIDES of the tubes. The tube clamp exerts outward pressure to the tubes. The final position is determined by a small boss extending out from the outer interior surface of the end casting. The shims essentially make that boss longer. The shims are necessary since his...

Re: Bow Xtender Fence

An idea that SS already has.... https://shopsmith.com/product/rip-fence-extension-package-for-mark-7-mark-v-520-mark-4/ Problem was price for me. IF SS would make it an option to compete price wise...it would make sense. All of my many SS toys would fit/work. Doc Currently on sale and av...

Re: Double tilt upgrade

I just attempted to upgrade my Mark V, serial number 329420. The bench tubes are too large to fit. If i order new tubes does that require a new motor and bench table? Or can these items fit the smaller diameter bench tubes. If your DT upgrade is complete it will also contain new double rack main ta...

Re: Quill coupler broken - where to source new part?

Today, I think I learned that there are at least two versions of the Drive and Ring. I might have them mixed up, but I think this one has been in my parts drawer for 40 years since I mistakenly bought it for my Greenie, and I think it is the same as one I received recently. Externally, it has some d...

Re: Bow Xtender Fence

That's excellent. I use fence extenders for large workpieces and agree with his comments on added control. My extenders are a pair of 510 fence extrusions mounted to the face of my 520 fence with countersunk screws and SS T-Nuts. The 5" height of the Bow Xtender isn't for me, it would not be co...

Re: SS 500 Router function?

...I have a router table that I mount ion a cutout on one of my workbench. I store it away, and have a rectangular piece of plywood that matches its size. That way, I have a router table or a workbench. I doubt you'll use the Mark as an under table router then. The system does provide overhead, hor...

Re: SS 500 Router function?

The closest I've come to this on a conventional headstock is shaping on my Greenie. There was a lot of noise and vibration, I felt it was unusable. Later conventional headstocks I've used were much better, but I've never used one for a high speed operation like routing or shaping. My suggestion is t...

Re: Idler shaft gets super hot

Update on the hot idler shaft issue. I picked up a replacement idler/sheave assembly. Night and day difference in how they spin. The 'hot' one is definitely bad, replacement one is doing fine. Thanks to all that helped me figure this out. For future reference, did you go with the 'new style' with t...

Re: New Owner

...The roll pin that attaches the headstock lock handle to the threaded rod is very much stuck. Possibly cold fused to the aluminum. Thats going to be a pain to deal with. I've had it soaking in PB blaster for the past 2 days and still no luck... As I understand it, in the early Mark 5 days the rol...
