Re: SS 500 Router function?

The closest I've come to this on a conventional headstock is shaping on my Greenie. There was a lot of noise and vibration, I felt it was unusable. Later conventional headstocks I've used were much better, but I've never used one for a high speed operation like routing or shaping. My suggestion is t...

Re: Idler shaft gets super hot

Update on the hot idler shaft issue. I picked up a replacement idler/sheave assembly. Night and day difference in how they spin. The 'hot' one is definitely bad, replacement one is doing fine. Thanks to all that helped me figure this out. For future reference, did you go with the 'new style' with t...

Re: New Owner

...The roll pin that attaches the headstock lock handle to the threaded rod is very much stuck. Possibly cold fused to the aluminum. Thats going to be a pain to deal with. I've had it soaking in PB blaster for the past 2 days and still no luck... As I understand it, in the early Mark 5 days the rol...

Re: Quill coupler broken - where to source new part?

FWIW when my Greenie was still a Gilmer, the quill was silver not black, and the splines were coarser than those appear to be. And the coupler in the photo doesn't look like the one my Gilmer quill had It didn't look my Greenie sleeve either, but mine was totally worn out 40 years ago, I only recen...

Re: Quill coupler broken - where to source new part?

Hello, I did a stupid thing today, and broke the plastic coupler in the quill assembly of my SS Mark 5. The part in question is the white plastic piece in the picture. I can't seem to find a replacement on ebay or anywhere else. I also don't know if I'm calling it by the wrong name. There are whole...

Re: How do you really feel about the term "Smart Motor"?

I like the term "headstock," which is used throughout the manuals I have. And the one used by the designers and engineers before I was born and throughout my 40 years or so of using a Mark 5/V/7. Although it has a processor or two, I don't like the term for the PowerPro headstock either. I...

Re: Packing & Moving a Shopsmith

I surmise thy experience has been with an exceptionally competent moving company . I've never had that experience, but I agree with him because damage and loss claims go easier if items are Carrier Packed (CP) in my experience. I moved every couple of years on average from 1979 to 1996 and my compa...

Re: New Owner

Apart from not turning speed control, is there anything else that is a BIG NO NO I should be aware of? The oldest Mark 5s don't have a safety ground or three wire power cord unless modified by a previous owner. I would encourage you to add the ground or check it if it has been added. Grounding has ...

Re: Why would a SM Mark 7 bog during operation?

For clarity, you also have a 'saw cuts funny' thread going. Am I correct to presume that the PowerPro is neither slipping nor bogging during table saw operations at approximately the same set/indicated speed? To me, that would suggest slipping. And you've already determined the coupler is slowing do...

Re: Why would a SM Mark 7 bog during operation?

Yes JPG 3500 rpm. This is a confusing convention that I blame SS for. On the PowerPro, RPM (set or measured) is always referring to upper spindle RPM. Same if you set a function through the menus. And I just checked my laminated speed charts, they also give Jointer speed of 3450 - 3500. But since t...
