Not necessarily relevant. Lack of proper maintenance is more likely the cause! Yeah, I'll bite the (insufficient maintenance) bullet on the control sheave ... how about motor bearings though? I see no Shop Smith recommendations for the "permanent" bearings. I did see some recommendations ...

The wheel puller for removing the stuck control sheave( yours with the open end). Must be able to grip the sheave(3" not big enough). 3 'hook' for sure!!! The beveled sheave surface makes that more difficult. I agree with the HF puller. Got mine when on sale. 20% off coupon recommended when 'r...

I have this set and it works well for me: http://m.harborfreight.com/bearing-separator-and-puller-set-93980.html Thanks Josh. Hopefully I have ordered what I need and will give the SS another go in a week or so. Anyone have any difficulty installing bearings on SS? I know some people heat the beari...

Continuing Saga

Hi Folks, An update - I was out of town for a week +, but in the meanwhile my new drive belt arrived and I installed that as well as the replacement sheave. Speed changing seems to go fine, but now I have a squeal that seems to originate in the motor bearings. I looked through joshh's tutorial on th...

Control sheave follow-up

Hey folks, Finally received my SS control sheave and mid-process putting it in, but had a few questions: 1) There was as you might expect a fair amount of sawdust inside the unit. Is it ok to put a little caulking around the port on the backside to keep some of that dust out. Even when it's on it is...

Thanks for all the info and encouragement. I ordered the Control Sheave Assembly and they told me it was not in stock. The customer service person said it would have to be manufactured but it should not be long as it is a frequently replaced part (as you have all told me). That was the bad news. The...
