Be aware that the 5/8" saw arbor comes in two sizes: one for the old model 500 and one for the later models (505, 510, 520). Both fit the same blades, but one is slightly longer than the other.

One caution about removing the tie bar. If it's stuck, don't beat on the webbing between the tubes - it's cast aluminum and can crack.

Packard Woodworks makes an XL turners' apron (goes all the way to the neck) that's good to a 50" waist, if that helps.

If you imagine the wood to be like a microscopic bundle of straws, no matter how much you sand, the ends of the "straws" will still be exposed. If you want a gloss finish, I think you're going to have to fill the grain, either with wood filler or fine sawdust mixed with finish.

The two sleeves that you lubricate on the motor and intermediate shafts only slide back and forth as you change speeds, so they shouldn't need any extra lubrication.
