I twisted and crimped the wires together. I hope it holds. I guess I will find out if not.

The liquid tape should be good to up to 200 degrees F. Is that not going to be good enough? I guess either way I need to keep an eye on it. Here is the pic of the final patch job.

A lot of patience, a little liquid electrical tape, a piece of heat shrink tubing, an inch and a half of wire, and ERIKA I have a working motor again!!!! A bit better than a couple hundred dollars I'd say. I guess not the question is how long will it last. Thanks all for the help.

The strands on the lower end of the pic are the cords (I don't know what the are made of) that are holding the windings together. I have attached another pic that shows this a little better.

I looked on ebay. I am going to give fixing it a shot. Here is a pic.

I just did a 1 1/8 hp motor search and found it. They say it is for a mark v, and from the pics it looks like it. The big difference that I see is the cap opposite the shaft end of the motor looks like it sticks out further.

I see a motor with the model number C48L2A1. My motor is 5KC37PN186A. does anyone know if these two motors will fit in the same foot print (mounting bolts)? All of the specs are otherwise the same.

Is there any way to clean up the area and fix it (re insulate the wires with some sort of spray)? If not is this something that I can take to a motor repair shop and they can fix? Last option, what is the best way that you all have found to get a new motor?

I have also noticed that when I turn the motor on (when it is not in the shopsmith) that rotates to one of 2 positions. These two positions are 180 degrees from each other. I don't know if that helps at all but it is something that is happening. At this point I would be very surprised if saw dust is ...

These pictures show the motor taken apart, what I think the start switch is, and the blackened area in the coils. Will any other pics be helpful?
