Using a 5L265 V-Belt as a drive belt substitute
SS is currently out of drive belts. I have read the pros and cons in numerous posts regarding using substitute 1/2" wide belts that were 26", 26 1/2" and 27" long (examples: 4L260, 4L265 and 4L270). As far as I can determine, the proprietary factory SS drive belt is 26.5" lo...

Need Dimensions of Fan Sheave Spacer
On my friend's older mark V, the motor fan sheave is just starting to rub on the housing. We pulled it apart, and the old "thin-style" spacer was badly deformed. He contacted SS and was told that their new thicker/beefier 5/8" bore fan sheave spacer (P/N 504205, #124) was on back orde...

Yes - IMO the newer entire idler shaft assembly using two bearings and with the split bushing does seem better from a maintenance standpoint: Advantages : replaceable bearings (as you mentioned) and no need for a jamming set screw in the split washer bushing; However, I do think that the old water-p...

I agree that the use of a pointed set screw in a groove to secure a bearing is somewhat unique and can cause problems. The use of the LS threadlocker allows you to be able to fasten the screw to about 12-15 in. pds (install torque), but needing around 28 in. pds. (break torque) to loosen it, thus ma...

Using Threadlocker on Eccentric Bushing Set Screw
( Tried to post this info on my post requesting a torque value, but kept getting an error message ) Problem Summary : How tight to torque the small allen set screw in an older idler shaft eccentric bushing (non-split type). Solution thus far posted: use an L-shaped allen wrench and tighten down usin...

I have somewhere remembered a 20 to 30 inch-pound figure and have used that with a small torque-wrench. Others have just pointed to a torque which barely flattens the lock-washer. Hello nuhobby, I'm not looking for the torque for the bolt that goes thru the headstock castings/ears and secures the b...

Eccentric Set Screw Help Needed - How Tight?
Hello Everyone, I have a 1957 MkV greenie with the gilmer drive and with the water-pump style bearing on the idler shaft. It has the solid eccentric bushing with the allen set-screw (screw that centers and keeps bearing from rotating in bushing). Here's my question: I'm trying to determine if I have...
