The carriage on my 500 is from an old Greenie, and it is threaded on the side facing the headstock for a stop bolt which does the same job the spacer ring does. Hi Midwest Preacher;

Here is a chart that gives serial numbers and approximate dates, but it does not seem to help with identifying the date of your machine. JPG is correct, more information and a picture or two would help.

Interesting idea! The hardware will be the critical part. That 'whitewood' resembles spruce. I agree...a VERY interesting idea. I think using a SS push block to put some down pressure on the piece as you feed it might make the operation feel more secure, and the block should keep the fingers far enough away just in case something goes awry.
