Re: Adding dustport to older bandsaw

Yes. Buy the dust port for a band saw from Shopsmith. They have an entire upgrade that includes a left side cover with the port and a window for the tension arm, or you can just buy the port, cut a hole in the cover and install it yourself. Adding a window a piece of clear plastic to see the tension...

Re: Mark v speed controller problem

If the quadrant that pushes on the bearing is not centered and perpendicular to the shaft on the upper sheaves you'll need excessive force on the speed dial to move the sheaves. Also, the outer sheave has to slide on the shaft to change speeds, if that's not sliding smoothly it could require excessi...

Re: New Owner to 2 Shopsmiths

A 510 with a bandsaw and joiner for $50 is a fantastic deal. Tailstocks are all interchangeable. You will want a 12" sanding disc, it is one of the best features of a Shopsmith.

Re: Which Lathe upgrade?

FWIW, the email add I got today features the Speed Reducer and shows it used for drilling. I'm sure it can be used for drilling. I haven't needed it for that because I have a PowerPro on my drill press. And because I have a PowerPro on my 510 also the only thing I may ever use it for is to run a ba...

Re: Which Lathe upgrade?

Ed, it may have been MY speed reducer, or "jack shaft" that I was talking about. The SS Speed Reducer can be used for drilling and actually does a fine job. Scott My recollection is that you pointed out that the speed reducer bracket had to be loosened for drill press operation which coul...

Re: Which Lathe upgrade?

You know, I'm leaning towards the speed reducer too. It just seems like it would make life a whole lot easier when dealing with those bigger bowls. Messing with your workflow is no joke. Tough decision, but if I had to pick, I'd say go for the speed reducer first. Costs a lot less than a PowerPro u...
