Drill Chuck Key Jams

Has anyone else had issues with a Shopsmith drill chuck key jamming as you try to turn it? The chuck threads seem to be in decent shape and the chuck rotates smoothly. My problem is that there appears to be some slight mismatch between the key thread and Jacobs chuck thread. The key does not rotate ...

Re: Bench Tube Construction

David, Thank you for your detailed information and recommendations. I had not seen the post from KCollins. His bench tubes look like the same ones they sent me. I happen to be a mechanical engineer by day which is why I asked the question about deflection. There will certainly be some weight reducti...

Re: Bench Tube Construction

<t>I received a very interesting email from Shopsmith customer service. They say that both the new bench tubes and way tubes are .050 thk but that they are made out of stainless steel. I can tell you that the bench tubes I received are magnetic but not as magnetic as my original tubes. Maybe they ar...

Re: Bench Tube Construction

I confirmed with Shopsmith today that they changed manufacturers and that the design has changed. I wonder if the new way tube walls are as thin wall as the new bench tubes because the bench tubes are definitely lighter and more flexible than the old ones.

Re: Bench Tube Construction

Below is a photo of the part # on the tube which matches the bench tube part number. The tubes are 1-3/4" OD X 52-3/4 L. The slot in the tube insert allowed me to get my caliper blades in to measure the wall thickness. Could be a bit off but looks way closer to .05" than .06" bench_tu...

Bench Tube Construction

I am rebuilding a 1991 Model 510. I just received two new bench tubes from Shopsmith and they are constructed differently than the old ones. See photo of new bench tube I received below. The new ones have a thinner wall, are much smoother on the exterior surface, and have steel inserts pressed in on...

Re: Drive Sleeve Pulley Slipping

Thanks to everyone for your responses, they have been very helpful. I will tear it down and see if I can tighten the set screw.

Re: Drive Sleeve Pulley Slipping

Thanks for your responses. Dusty, is your drive sleeve assembly without the set screw a newer model? If so, I wonder if I have to pull the drive sleeve out anyhow if I should switch to the press fit version so I don't have to worry about the set screw loosening in the future? Wouldn't be a big issue...
