Finished rebuild
Many thanks to those in this forum both past and present that helped me navigate through some sticky spots on the Shopsmith rebuild. I got this Mark V 500 from a fellow in Virginia in March for $300. It was a mess and hadn't been used in some time, having been stored in the rafters of his shop. It c...

Re: Idler shaft moving around
I think it's fixed. So I decided to install the old eccentric bearing even though it has a small crack in it. I think having that pointed set screw in the old eccentric bearing really helped to keep the idler shaft from moving around. I also installed a larger washer to retain the bearing and idler ...

Re: Idler shaft moving around
Russ, I did replace the eccentric bearing on my headstock because it had a crack in it. The newer (used) eccentric bearing you see, is something I just put in. I thought I could use it on this headstock. Serial# 120962 I'll take a look at that poly v belt and center it. Just to check on movement, I ...

Re: Idler shaft moving around
Thank you to all who responded. It really helps. Pictures here. The good news is that I looked inside the case real good to make sure there was nothing loose or broken. Everything looks ok. I did oil the idler shaft before assembly and slid the second sheave back and forth several times to make sure...

Idler shaft moving around
I'm rebuilding a Mark V 500 headstock following Jacob Anderson's video. I'm down to the part where I'm about to turn on the motor and make sure everything runs smoothly. Jacob A. hand turns the spindle assembly while he turns down the speed control from the fastest to a slower drum speed. Whenever I...

How do you sell something you don't have?
I know that some of you are going to go "duh," but I'm disappointed in Shopsmith. I called Orders today to find that my order from two weeks ago has not gone out the door because they are waiting for their stock to be replenished. Hey Shopsmith, it's 2021 and there's something called Opera...

How to paint the access badge?
I've read a few threads in this section on headstock rebuilds. I'm still not sure how people are masking the letters when repainting the access badge. My wife suggested a watercolor liquid called mask that can be removed after painting. Does anyone have experience painting the speed dial or access b...

Re: Black powder gunk under motor?
I like the bad belt line of thought. The belts looks pretty new. Perhaps they failed in the past and were replaced? Another issue could be some liquid that dripped into the motor pan. There was varnish or some liquid drip stains on the skirts bad enough that I sanded and repainted them. Perhaps a pr...

Black powder gunk under motor?
I purchased a 1982 Model 500 and intend to rebuild the headstock. I got the headstock off the frame and the guard off. I detached the motor from the bottom casing and the casing was full of saw dust. There was some black powdery gunk directly underneath the motor. It didn't smell burnt. There was al...

Re: Help with faded warning label please
If you have any more warning labels, I'd like one. I just bought a 1982 Mark V Model 500. The label is completely faded.
