I have installed the new speed controller and made sure it was set to the slow setting and it starts up with no issues. (and I can adjust the speed too.)

Just an update.

The screw on the speed controller is bent and made changing the speed very difficult. It is basically stuck on high speed. I have ordered a new speed controller.

Thank you all for the responses.
After reading the replys it looks like it is stuck on high speed.
The belt is all the way down on the sheave . I will look to adjust this and do some more cleaning on the motor and inside the headstock.

I hope to get to do this task tomorrow afternoon.

Slow to start and throws breaker

I just purchased an early 1970's shopsmith.
When the seller showed it to me it started up just fine and ran and the speed adjuster worked, but not well due to stripped gears on the the controller knob.

After I got it home I plugged it in and it seems slow to get up to speed and throws the 15 amp ...
