Re: Planer adjustment

Some googling and I've now learned this is pretty common and referred to as snipe: https://fixthisbuildthat.com/6-ways-to-reduce-planer-snipe/. As that article outlines, is this just a thing you have to deal with or is there something about the shopsmith that makes this worse or gives me options to ...

Planer adjustment

I've recently rebuilt a Mark V mounted planer, sharpened the blades, etc. I turned it on tonight and I'm happy to report that it largely worked and I'm still alive! However, I think I'm either not doing something right or it still needs some adjustment. The issue I'm having is that the start and end...

Re: Planer knives adjustment

There may be another option. Where are you located? Maybe someone nearby you could be of assistance. I'm in SLC but honestly option b had enough upside to where I just went ahead and placed the order. I like the idea of being able to do the sharpening myself in the future and everyone here is sayin...

Re: Planer knives adjustment

So I could either do: a. take them back to the shop, argue with the guy, wait a week, and then have no choice but to go through the same process again in a few months after having let them get way too dull because I wanted to avoid all that or b. spend $180 for the conical disk package and sharpenin...

Re: Planer knives adjustment

The blades should not be bowed. The cutting edge should be dead straight. If new - send them back. If used, they need to be sharpened properly. Do you have the gig and a conical disk? https://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/catalog/j_knifesharpener.htm I don't. I just took them to a local shop that doe...

Re: Planer knives adjustment

ok! well, looks like the issue was that my head was on backwards! Yes the mark I said was wrong was actually 100% where it should be and the knives do indeed kiss right around there. Thank you everyone for patiently helping while I figured this out. Now I may have another problem, my blades aren't p...

Re: Planer knives adjustment

Ok, I've added some notes to the images to clarify. Basically where the "scribe line"/"zero line" should be, there is only 1/32 of room (gauge is 1/32" above cutter head) but to "kiss" at that spot I'd need more like 5/8" of room because that is how far the kn...

Re: Planer knives adjustment

If I put it where it is shown in the diagram, it lifts the gauge about 1/2" up. So you need to adjust the knife down, using the 7/16" measurement. The screws are in all the way and I can visually see they are actually lower than the bottom of channel the knives sit in. They can't go any l...

Re: Planer knives adjustment

When blade depth is set correctly, the sharp edge of the blade should just "kiss" the gauge at the mark when rotated. If the blade does not kiss the gauge or when the blade lifts the gauge, blade height is incorrect. Yeah but the issue is that it only kisses the gauge if I put the mark at...

Re: Planer knives adjustment

This is the diagram I was going off of. If I put the line where that diagram indicates, I only have < 1/16" of clearance. Although that diagram also suggests I should have way more than 1/16" of clearance. Is that diagram not to scale or did I reassemble this thing wrong?? I don't think so...
