answer:

Thank you for the welcome.

Sorry for the delay....

I simply unscrewed it with a rag, by hand.

after a quick squirt of PB Blaster and a few minutes to soak in, I tapped lightly with a hammer as I turned the nut by hand, essentially creating an impact wrench.

thank you

To all who shared their insight and experience with the NIB/NOS headstock that seemed frozen and would not turn.
I have no update for a solution or answer to the original problem, if any. The seller has relisted the SS 510 for >$1200(up from ~$900), and decribes the sale as "tools: the item pictured ...

btw

I had called initially spoke to the sellers friend who listed the sale. A few weeks later he called me back, then had the owner call me. So my feeling is that this thing has to move and I was their only hint of a possible sale.

JCP DC/joiner is part of the deal, not sure what else other than that.

I was up front an honest with the seller as to what I know and suspected as cause for the frozen motor: turn of speed control w/o motor turning, packing, heavy sticky packing grease or a dry sticky belt. I am in a very small ...

I only saw a dust collector and a joiner. No other accessories. All only partially unpacked.
Sure would save me a lot of time in tuning and polishing...

The seller was going to call me tonight. I will ask more questions/search stored area for other parts. Sadly it is not well organized, in a ...

thanks for reply dusty...

I tried to move by hand. Didn't want to man handle something I do not own yet or reveal too much to the seller who inherited it, is cabinet maker trained(uses stand alone shop equipment), but know nothing about SS.

It is quite a contrast for me, as a SS noob with an old greenie, to see a nice shiny ...

culture/education

Just a though... It seems that shop and home economics has become less and less a part of public education. It would be my guess that the 36-45y/o group was the last to attend these programs as standard course in public schools. I also believe traditional craftmanship and self reliance, for the most ...

any ideas? new SS510, never unpacked, stored. motor will not turn?

I own a 1954 green mark V that is in rehab. I have been offered a model 510. Mfg year 1986, purchased in 1987(as recalled, I did not check the data plate). Never unpacked, greasy, still has cardboard packing on tubes and red tape over switch. Before I closed the deal 8 tried to turn the motor by ...

noob Question/Challenge re:1954 ShopSmith mark 5: frozen arbor, wrench too small?

Obvious choice: SS mark 5 with all the add ons...

I found one on craigslist with bandsaw, jointer, shaper, disc/drum and belt sanders, jigsaw, lathe... extra saw blades, bits, arbors and ...
