Wow, thanks for all the information. I think a plug in type transformer is the easiest/most cost effective option.

Will it "hurt" the SS? I'm not worried about the other appliances, just the 1996 SS Mk V!

It's initially a 3 year assimgment, but if we like it we might stay longer.

dual voltage-?

I have a Mk V and will be moving to Germany this fall where the voltage is 220-240 Volt and 60 Hertz. And the SS is the first thing the movers will be packing, selling it before we move is not an option! Transformers are available, but I was wondering if there is a way for the Mk V to run on 220? Th...

Yep, it's in the garbage. Just ordered a new one from SS. I'm not sure what the previous owner did, the splines on the bandsaw and headstock look to be in perfect condition and line up to each other perfectly to the naked eye.
Thanks for all the friendly help and advice, this forum rocks!

Bad Coupler-?

SS Forum Comprades,
Here's a picture of the coupler that seems to be the issue. The internal teeth are worn/damaged about 50%, and it is out of round. I lined up the head stock and the band saw and they were perfect - I think the issue is obvious!

I'll be ordering a new coupler from SS!

We figured it out, it looks like the ShopSmith brand coupler is "out of round", it wobbles a little bit when on either the bandsaw or headstock and rotated by hand. I think I'll see if I can order a new coupler, along with a few adjustment nuts and bolts that are missing. Good news is we d...

Well, the first thing I noticed was the plastic coupler was jammed onto the powerhead side, used a pair of pliers to free the powerhead collet-there was a bunch of rust colored gunk around the spring. I have to collet on the headstock, tigthened the ser screw. When I slide the headstock to the bands...

I think the bottom guard is missing. I just set it up for table saw and noticed 10" of spinning saw blade just hanging out under the table. It was $900, a good deal I think, a Mk VII is like $3,600+ I am having trouble with the bandsaw coupler, it's being stubborn, doesn't seem to want to "...

New Shopsmith 500 owners

All, My wife and I just picked up this Mk V, with bandsaw, biscuit jointer, router and a bunch of other misc accessories. I've been trying to talk my Father-in-Law out of his early '80s Shopsmith for about 13 years, I finally gave up and bought a 1992 model off of Craigslist this am. Now for the pro...
