Re: Drill height from table top
Yes, I should have mentioned that I'm doing horizontal drilling. I may make a plywood platform and remove the table. Thanks, Ed.

Drill height from table top
It looks like the maximum height for drilling off the table for my 510 is 2-5/16”. I had a case where I needed a more than that, and I was wondering if anybody has any suggestions on a creative way to increase that. It looks like the table bottoms out right at 2-5/16” centered on the drill chuck.

Re: Hollow Chisel Mortising System Opinions
I put a caliper on the chisel and the bit. Chisel is .374 and the bit is .364, so it’s not the end of the bit being oversized. I laid a straight 1/4” steel rod on the shaft of the bit as it spun and saw no movement on the shaft. Then, I rolled the bit on a flat cast iron table with the cutting end h...

Re: Hollow Chisel Mortising System Opinions
The mortising attachment arrived, and installation was straightforward. I spent some time sharpening the chisel with the supplied cone sharpener, and cleaned off the outside burr on all four sides with Japanese water stones. The initial results, however, were disappointing. For some reason, the bit ...

Re: Hollow Chisel Mortising System Opinions
Thank you for the details. I ordered Geoffrey Baker's replacement handles, along with the mortising kit and table support leg. I'll report back when I run some test mortises. Thanks again, all for the responses.

Re: Hollow Chisel Mortising System Opinions
Thank you Ed, and others. I have a horizontal mortiser with a router, but since these mortises will be visible I’d need to square the corners. That’s what I’m mulling over. A chisel mortiser would give me close to finished mortises. I did read about deflection in the table with the SS mortiser, and ...

Hollow Chisel Mortising System Opinions
If anyone has the Hollow Chisel Mortising System 555810, what’s your opinion of it? Does it cut clean, square mortises? Is there anything about it that you don’t like? I’m trying to decide whether I want to buy the Shopsmith kit for my Shopsmith, or buy a standalone benchtop mortiser. Thank you.
