Re: GFCI Success

JPG, I agree with everything you say here except the last line. It is my understanding that GFCI's are using a comparator to measure the difference in current between the hot and neutral leads only (ground is not measured as far as I know). Of course, if there is any imbalance then that delta curre...

Re: Retractable casters AND raise the height

I’m 6’3”, so my 520 table-saw height is great for me, but the lathe height is too low. I’m thinking that when I get around to installing the new upgraded casters, I’ll keep the brackets at their existing mounting height, and devise some “feet” to mount beneath the legs. But this got me wondering: i...

Re: Retractable casters AND raise the height

I'm 6'5", and yes using the lathe is painful. I've used a tall stool in the past, and sat on it/leaned against it. Works ok for smaller projects. Here are a couple of ideas I've contemplated. one is buying an extra set of legs off ebay or something and bolting or riveting them inside the curren...

Re: Making a Shopsmith Mark V Homemade Metal Lathe

Visited Bill a number of times years ago. Every time I visited, he taught me things he came up with over the years to improve the Shopsmith. First lesson was taking the headstock motor apart & pulling out the start winding leads to connect to a DTDP switch. The switch allowed reverse, as well a...

Re: GFCI Success

Depending on where you live, some applications of 240V now require GFCI as well. Going from my recollection: outdoor A/C units, laundry room (dryer), and garage if you are in an area where NEC 2020 is required. I don't recall the outbuilding or basement requirements. When I looked at this the circu...

Re: GFCI Success

So, I am the one that advocated switching to hospital grade GFCI receptacles in a previous forum thread here. Sorry it did not fix your problem, but this was just a theory that I was advocating because it worked in a couple of prior instances for me. Of course, those could have been different circu...
