That's a chuck insert. A coupler is an entirely different thing. I'm not trying to be pedantic -- using consistent terminology helps avoid confusion!

I think that is a Nova Insert for an Insert style chuck, as opposed to a Shopsmith adapter for a chuck with a common lathe thread size and pitch.

The spindle has a tapered flat ground on it which gets deeper in the direction towards the headstock. That way, should the screw become loose, things don't fly off the spindle (this is not my picture)

Thanks. Yes I already have some other size sanding drums. Just weighing the risks if I want to add a proprietary item to the toolkit, if the consumables are single-source. And it sounds like they are single-source.

I have seen different size Sanding Drum Sleeves around (Woodcrafters come to mind) but have not looked for that specific size for the Shopsmith Sanding Drum.
