I've turned hickory with good results. Last winter I made up some handles for my files from hickory. I used my Shopsmith basic 5 piece turning tool set. It should work for pens too if you use the correct size tools.

The outfeed is higher than the infeed by the amount you are cutting from the board. If it sat at any other height, you could not cut a board straight.

Check and compare prices in your area of other ones for sale. Prices vary greatly around the US. You don't way where you live. I made some last winter from wood scraps. I turned them on my Shopsmith using my Shopsmith lathe tools.
Look around for some used lathe tools. They make the job easy.

Years ago I bought a set of bits, proudly "Made in Japan". They folded up like pretzels just like yours. Since then, I buy US made bits and break them eventually.
