What’s Your Shopsmith Connection?

I’ve always enjoyed wrenching on old machines and using them. I’m not sure if I’m more of a nuts and bolts guy or a sawdust maker. I always found the Shopsmith concept intriguing and I wanted a retirement project so I jumped on buying one when it became available locally. Now that I have one, I’m re...

Re: Gray Scroll Saw Rear Cradle Fix - 514982

I discovered that the plate I made interfered with tilting the table past about 25 degrees . . . so I trimmed it a bit as shown below. I don't think the table will quite tilt to 45 degrees now but I'm not sure it ever would. It can now tilt way past any angle that I could ever imagine using.

Gray Scroll Saw Rear Cradle Fix - 514982

I discovered that the rear table trunnion cradle (part #514982) on my recently acquired 555220 Gray scroll saw was broken right down the middle. The design looks pretty fragile, so I would wager that this problem is not uncommon. The part is long since discontinued and the design of the teal unit is...

Re: FrankenMark V Lives!

Well, I did get the hold-down part of the safety grip but not the rest of the SS miter gauge. I did get the oddball miter gauge shown in the photo along with a matching rip fence and rails from something else. In fact, I got quite a variety of extra duplicate parts along with a pile of identifiable ...

FrankenMark V Lives!

A big thank-you to everyone on this forum who helped me figure things out. As you probably know, a few weeks ago I bought what I was told was a 1982 Mk V Model 500 in good repair. . . . with a bandsaw, jointer, and scroll saw. The Mk V was partially disassembled and I was new to Shopsmith so I didn'...

Re: LED Light Blubs

I’ve mostly switched over to LED lighting and I’m mostly satisfied. I’ve had a few bulbs fail but not too many. The strangest problem I had was when I first put LED bulbs in my garage door opener. When the garage door opener lights were on, the remote controls in the cars had almost no range. When t...

Re: Getting Frustrated With Repairs

Jacobs makes a repair kit for their original chucks. Replaces the innards. Thanks for the good information. I’ll keep that stored away for next time. A guy on eBay had an OEM chuck he claimed was “new open box” at a much lower cost than a new one from SS. I don’t have access to a press so out of fr...

Re: Getting Frustrated With Repairs

I paid $650 for the 1982 Mk V that had been upgraded to a 510. It included a jointer, a bandsaw, a gray scroll saw, blades, arbors, sanding disc, tailstock, lathe parts, push blocks, etc. It was being sold by a guy for an elderly friend who had moved into assisted living. It wasn’t the greatest barg...

Re: Getting Frustrated With Repairs

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I’m getting a thorough education on repair and maintenance. I even learned how to disassemble and reassemble a Jacobs drill chuck. I used to build a bit of furniture a couple of decades back but got away from it. Now that I’m retired, I’m putting together another (more com...
