Re: Restoring 10ER S/N 83974
I use Nyalox wheel brushes chucked up in my Shopsmith for most such chores. They come in three different "grits", from fine/gentle to moderately aggressive, and I have found each to be useful. Vastly superior to wire wheels, IMHO. I used one a while back to test clean/polish a section of ...

Almost there. I got the main table top almost done. I want to work on the top surface a little more. I also need to get a piece of PVC pipe to soak the fence bar in Evaporust. I also just realized I don't have a blade guard. I know I have a couple with the other machines in the garage. I will use on...

Re: Lathe / Face Plate Run out ...narrow vessel hallowing
Is it a common problem to have the tail stock eccentric slip, requiring another set screw? Sadly, yes. To add to the sadness, the eccentric is soft. Over tightening the single screw creates a depression that makes small adjustments(centering) nigh onto impossible. Also the fit is sloppy. I use a st...

Re: Problem with conical disc sander
1st table and disc 90* 2nd read the instructions on how much to remove per pass based on grit!!! 3rd table needs to be above center line, read instructions on that. 4th in doubt read instructions again. 5th you can go to SS site I think to get a net copy of instructions to read. That is true but as...

Re: Harvesting giant redwoods in the 1940's
Ya JPG the first thing I was thinking too was a cog, like the one on Mnt Washington in NH, noisy thing!!! Cool, would that be coincided a core less engine? With its exposed crank shafts? Hmmm... Do you mean core less or Corliss? There is a core less DC motor that obviously has nothing to do with ex...

Cool. So, I guess the idea for these locomotives was that they were geared so much lower than a normal locomotive. Huge amount of torque at the expense of top speed. That is pretty much it. With a direct drive piston steam engine you can get more torque with smaller wheels. There is a limit however...

Re: polishing way tubes
Hey I've always wanted to visit Utah. Do you have a guest room? Could we bang this out in a couple weeks? :D :D :D Unfortunately no guest room. If all the new bearings and other new parts that might be needed were on hand you might be able to do it that fast. I don't think I would really want to tr...

No such thing that I can find Dusty, but I am better at WW then computing. Sure you can. Open in Adobe Acrobat and click on menu item View. The first item in the drop down is "Rotate View. Of course then it will also rotate the second page which you don't want. Why do you want it rotated? If y...

Re: polishing way tubes
FWIW, the 1 1/2" drum sanding mandrel fits thin wall 10ER tubes perfectly so it should fit MK V tubes since they are the same diameter and wall thickness. Hey thanks John, I think I even have one of those around here somewhere. By the way, the 10ER you rebuilt is probably the most stunning pie...
