Re: Gopher Wood

We might be able to find some if we really knew what it was. In the mean time anything that floats should work. :) :)

Re: Portable Table

Not sure why glass size is an issue. I certainly have two glasses the same size here.

Re: Restoring 10ER S/N 83974

More before and after pictures of some of the quill parts. The drive sleeve bearings were toast but the quill bearings didn't feel too bad. I am still going to replace all the bearings while I have it apart. They are not that expensive and it won't have to be taken apart for another 60+ years. :D

Re: Musings of a “New” Shopsmith Owner

Welcome rutpoule. Your musings on the SS are spot on. I am a man but my wife is a woodworker too and we share the shop together. Looking forward to your contributions.

Re: So Glad I Own A Shopsmith

The bottom line is that you need some amount of clearance or you will overheat both the drill and the chisel. Once that happens they are ruined and no amount of sharpening will help. I don't know but if they can I suspect the cost would be more than a new set. After tempering, they would need to be...

More parts with the final coat of paint. These were painted just before we left for Sacramento on the 15th.

Re: So Glad I Own A Shopsmith

The deeper one goes, the more critical table rigidity becomes. Binding becomes a problem when retrieving to clear debris. Any deviation from straight due to flexing make that worse. I do not expect the SS to perform anywhere near what a dedicated, robust mortiser would. Perhaps the gentleman from U...

Re: So Glad I Own A Shopsmith

Beautiful shutters! On the topic of hollow chisel mortising, this is the Shopsmith attachment that seems to get the most criticism. But along comes someone who says it works great. I don't own one so I don't know who to believe. I always hear folks talk about sharpening the chisels. But I don't hea...

Re: So Glad I Own A Shopsmith

Pine looks easy(still fun assembling I bet). Tell us about the angle 'iron'. Yes it was clear pine but I have done it in Oak and hard Maple. Again, it is all about sharp tools and in this case it is very important. You can't stick a butter knife in even a piece of pine. What do you want to know abo...
