Getting Frustrated With Repairs
I bought a 1982 Mk V a few weeks ago and I keep finding missing and broken stuff. I have more money spent on parts than I spent on the machine. It’s getting frustrating. Thankfully, the parts are still available and I can turn a wrench. Hopefully I’ll run out of stuff to fix and start making sawdust...

Re: Should I Install a New Style Idler Or My Old One?
Thanks for the replies! I got the rebuild kit today and reassembled the headstock. I replaced the drive sleeve bearings and both belts. I had already replaced the quill bearing. As suggested, I re-used the old water pump bearing idler and eccentric sleeve. Everything fit okay. I was able to pull the...

Should I Install a New Style Idler Or My Old One?
I just tore down my recently acquired 1982 Mark V. It was squealing at higher speeds. I found a noisy bearing on the drive sleeve and the belts weren't looking too good. The old idler with the water pump bearing seems fine. Tomorrow I will receive a rebuild kit from the folks who sell the blue bands...

Re: 518245 - Scroll Saw Hold Down Foot Assembly
BigAl, If part number 518245 - Scroll Saw Hold Down Foot Assembly Includes all the parts reference numbers 56 through 63 it should replace the existing gray Scroll Saw assembly. I would contact Shopsmith first to confirm that. Previously there was an upgrade kit for the gray Scroll Saw that include...

Re: Quill Bearing Noise - New Bearing Or Upgrade?
Yep. I’m a little concerned about changing the bearings on the drive sleeve. I have a Pittsburgh bearing separator and puller kit from Harbor Freight. I’m hoping that using that and maybe some pipe scraps or deep well sockets I’ll be able to pull things apart and pull them back together without appl...

Re: Quill Bearing Noise - New Bearing Or Upgrade?
Do you have rust issues, or is something else causing it to be stuck? No rust, but possibly some other corrosion? I used a little more heat today and was able to drive the bearing and shaft out. The bearing then came right off the shaft using a three jaw puller. The OD of the bearing and the ID of ...

Re: Quill Bearing Noise - New Bearing Or Upgrade?
Thanks! I actually have a nice variety of bearing pullers, a bearing separator, etc. I think I could get the bearing off the shaft easily enough . . . once I get the bearing out of the tubular part of the quill. Maybe I'll carry the quill over to a local automotive shop and see if they would be will...

Re: Quill Bearing Noise - New Bearing Or Upgrade?
Thanks again. I took the quill out and removed the internal snap ring and the thin spacer ring between the snap ring and the outer bearing race. I couldn’t disassemble anything further. The bearing is stuck tight on the OD of the shaft and the ID of the quill. A reasonable amount of beating with a d...

Re: Quill Bearing Noise - New Bearing Or Upgrade?
Thanks! I'm only replacing the quill bearing. It is retained in the tubular part of the quill by an internal snap ring and a spacer, visible from the output end. It looks like if I remove the snap ring, I can pull out the spindle shaft along with the the bearing and leave the tubular part of the qui...
