pics of finished project

Here are some pics of the book matched door and the finished project. I call it a Hall secetary. The lid opens up to reveal a hidden compartment under the removable shelf for electronic chargers. The electronics (cell phones, etc) plug in and charge on the shelf. The drawer is for car keys, glasses,...

Follow up to finishing question

Thanks for all the input and suggestions. Each suggestion proved helpful. Here are the results of my query. I stained the panel and applied one coat of finish AND stained the shoulders of the groove on the rails and stiles. I then glued and fitted the door in the carcass. After fitting the door, I s...

Finishing question

I have made a door for a cabinet, which has a flat panel that I book, matched from a piece of white oak. Oak rails and stiles with grooves and stub tenons house the panel. I will not glue the panel in the frame but will use some spongy material (somewhat like space balls) in the grooves to allow for...

I bought my first SS in 1990, a brand new model 510. I now have three SS in my dedicated workshop, a 520, a 500 and a 10ER. Currently retired thanks to the recession. Although I have Parkinson's disease, I try not to let that slow me down because I love woodworking and I need to constantly keep busy...

Sharpening bowl gouges

I have brand new Sorsby 1/2" and 1/4" bowl gouges. I know they need sharpening and honing before using them. Can they be sharpened using the SS sharpening guide (555204)? If yes, how? If not, what is the best way to sharpen these gouges?

I use a small 2 ton bottle jack from Sears on my SS 10er set up in the drill press mode. That thing is a beast to move on the way tubes in the vertical position. The bottle jar makes things very easy. The lucky strike extra is that the bottle jack also provides a safety net in case the table lock sh...

spSeed dial difficulties

I recently bought a SS 500 that appears to be in good shape. The headstock sounds good and it cuts wood rather easy. The speed dial is very difficult to turn. I'm sure this subject has been discussed before. Can someone provide me the links to the previous threads about this subject? Is this problem...

iclark: Based on the link you posted, I have the Sorby 842LH 1/4" and 1/2" bowl gouges to answer your question. You and others have repeatedly mentioned keeping the gouges sharp. Question: Are the gouges sharp enough to use when new or do they need sharpening (vs. minor honing and touch up...

miter slot measurement

What is the actual SS miter gauge bar measurement? I measured mine at 3/4" wide. For Christmas I got a Rockler sliding table with a 3/4" bar that doesn't fit my slots on the main table. After a closer measurement, my slots seem to be 1/16" smaller. Does SS make a smaller miter bar? I ...
