Need a press
The bearings need to be put in a hydraulic press to be knocked in/out. Try it with your fingers....Ain't happening. At least for the average SS owner. Bearings are done with an international code number. If you have the number (stamped on the bearing) any bearing shop can press in/out a change out. ...

reminds me...
Two years ago I worked to restore a "54 Magna SS, stored for 40 years. It just "hummed". My machinist neighbor arrived to assist. He secured a sanding disc to the spindle, then as the motor "hummed", grabbed the disc and spun it. Slowly but surely, it revved back up to full ...

Maybe...but....
(Ed.....I'm glad to have this computer back up and able to read from you.) My "getting cocky" wasn't all the error. I was cutting right along doing an operation that the saw guard had to be off.....easy repetive cuts AND my sliding sled/jig caught a knot (?). BANG... jumped out of the mite...

It's my next big buy
Having had my hand caught badly several years ago, a SawStop will be my next big purchase. (Wasn't my SS's fault....this operator just got too cocky.) For the non believers, check out the Jan 07 WOODCRAFT issue. A group of veteran woodworkers put the system to the test. It is not only as safe as it'...

Learn to sharpen...
If your chisel set did not come with the sharpening stone(s) and instructions....get them. You are now learning that all new (most.....Forrest excepted) tools need to be sharpened by the owner/professional for optimium results. Keep your SS mortise chisels especially sharp. Your gear set in a SS is ...

Sleds and other stuff
I just tired three times to upload some photos of sleds but I get an error message that the file exceeds the allows limits..... Actually it tells me that I'm sending a JPG file....my computer says it's a JPEG file well within the defined limits. 1.19MB is less than 1.91MB..at least I thought so. Ano...

Try a sled
Having wrestled with long stock with less than desirable results, I shelved my miter gauge and build several cross cutting sleds. Much better results. When I first bought my 520 package, I did get the SS sled. It works well enough but once you see how simple the principle is, buy some of the SS mite...

Taught by an Academy instructor...
I agree with Ed. Check your machine. Remember that the Academy guys keep their stuff cleaned and well tuned. Makes for better, quieter demos... Woods like pine, have a habit of creating dust clumps on about everything. Ever take apart your saw guards and have to chip crap off? The fan might have the...

Better idea....
If that is a 500 carriage, why go to all the work and expense? Upgrading to a 510 is easy. The parts, carriages and tables, can be found all the time on eBay. Guys who use this and other sites have them for sale all the time and are good folks to deal with. I upgraded a Magna 1954 with all parts to ...

That's the one....
Couldn't agree more. I researched every router table I could find and chose the Hawk RouterShop. I'm a dunce when it comes to setting a router table up. I need all the help I can get. This system works great.....Very easy to learn especially if you have no other router table experience. Tip....wait ...
