I would suggest a chuck that includes a screw center. Also, make sure you have a live center rather than the cup center. As Paul said, pine might not be the best choice for most projects. However, it can be a decent and cheap wood to practice on--I used some 2X4 scrap pieces to help me improve my ba...

Neat idea, I've been thinking about the need to get something like this. Perhaps shortening the threadstock would reduce the vibration. Looks like there's plenty on the right side that you could remove. Could you put fender washers and nuts on each side of each wheel to keep the side-to-side movemen...

I've not yet tried CA on wood pens, hope to do on my next batch when weather warms up. I did use CA on a couple of plastic key fobs I turned for stocking stuffers and it worked well other than needed overnight to dry (but the temp was only in the 40s when I put it on); I applied it with a paper towe...

Edski, I'm a youngster to the SS world, purchasing my used 500 w/bandsaw and jointer 1.5 years ago. I already had a Ryobi BT3000 table saw, which I won't part with as I really dislike the SS's table saw function, and a floor standing drill press, which I could see replacing with a smaller bench-moun...

I'd like to see a wood turning forum. An off-topic forum might also be fun.

Could you tell me what parts are needed to get started pen turning? I have the penn state catalog and wasn't sure what to get. I will need the mandrel centers and chisels along with pen guts. Have you ever made pencils? I bought a mandrel from Woodcraft that had a #2 morse taper screwed onto the ma...

Jason, I'm fairly new to turning myself, around 9 months since I first held a tool during a class at the local vo-tech. The first thing I'd recommend investing in is any type of beginners' class. You should look for something that will teach you how to safely use a lathe for spindle work (maybe bowl...

I bought a lightly used ~83 500 last summer for $300. Included were a jointer and bandsaw and I believe nearly all the standard accessories. Had a bit of light surface rust here and there that cleaned up easily. It runs great.

I'd gladly part with $25 or so. However, I'd really want to get an idea first if the video were of adequate quality with good closeups, lighting, etc. Perhaps you could first post a short howto for free, even before you commit to a full DVD, to gauge people's interest, get feedback, etc. How to lube...

Travelling Academies

I bought a lightly used 1983 or 1984 SS 500 last summer. It worked fine and was in great shape but hadn't been lubed, adjusted, etc., in years. I attended all 3 of the Travelling Academies here in Oklahoma City and found them well worth the money. The first day included tuning up and lubricating the...
