Hi JPG, What size are the floor joists above? Noise can be a big problem depending upon what is just above the 'shop' area. You did not mention the source of the 'somewhat heated in winter'. If it is through the floor above, then using fiberglass bats for sound deadening would decrease that 'heat'. ...

This seems to be a good place to ask for advice on setting up a new shop in the basement. :) Can you help me with some general things to consider before I go paint myself into a corner? I've cleaned out an area in the basement (an irregular shape); but it's what I've got to work with. The walls and ...

I whole heartedly agree Forrest.

The Academy article to which you referred mistakenly assumes, I assume, that there is no warp or twist to the broad side of the board. That most often is not the case. Your first task is to flatten at least one side before you joint an edge. If you h...

The coil is across pins 2 to 5 (3.25 ohms) The switch is across pins 1 to 2 (zero ohms) I'll take your advice, for now cleaning it up and putting it back together is best. I can look for an 'equivalent' in my spare time.... if and when I get some. I'll let you know if the intermittent start-up probl...

The second motor was a backup in case something happened to the original. It was a mothballed motor I got a while back with the intention of restoring it. This was as good as any time... BTW... no chainsaw, coping saw.... Well it's open now; "how?” you ask. Simple, I took the mounting bracket o...

Hey... guess what! it works..... (duh) :o I asked my daughter to look at JPG's post and see what she thought. She said,
"dad are you color blind and dyslexic? I'm glad there are people out there who can pitch in and work together as a team. And like some teams in your life… there may no...

1/2 cool... :( Forward direction works very smooth. :) Reverse direction does not rotate, hums loud, and gives off unsavory toasty smell after only being plugged in for 1/2 second. Just to confirm reverse direction bench test wiring:  wh to power neutral (white) blk to power hot (bla...

I(moi) would be taking the relay apart(carefully so as to NOT alter its operating and examine the contact for possible 'fixing'. Hi JPG, well you didn't come right out and say it but looks like my first wack at it left me "all wet". :o If this motor was yours ] A.O.Smith is no help.[/QUOT...

If there is a small current thru the "black box" relay coil (and start winding), then it will help to determine the voltage drop across both coil/winding. I'm not sure if it will be milliamps or higher. The measured 3.2 Ohms is purely resistive. The coil/winding inductive impedance cannot ...

I'll double check the measurements and get back with you.

I don't have an amp meter right now to check the current in the "black box" relay coil.

Thanks for sticking with this for me.
