Re: Chisels

2 things. I get the sizing differences for the same tools style, that makes sense. The ones that have a hook look like a slim jim to unlock a car however is confusing. I took a picture of something today that came with my SS collection. It looks like something I have seen, but I cannot so...

Re: Chisels

Skew, Gouge, Parting tool, Diamond point scraper, round nose scraper . . . . . Beeg may or may not have said "Oh THOSE kind of chisels." :D I took wood shop in High school 800 years ago and I had a blast on the Lathe. If we covered the different chisels, teen year party behavior wiped the...

Re: Quill Bearing Noise - New Bearing Or Upgrade?

I ordered all new parts, the Gilmer I am going to bench it seems. I did pull the bearings from the Jointer today, they were USA made bearings and I was able to cross it by size over to a Bocca Bearing. I was walking through the shop and noticed a spare Screen Print press part that I have from one I ...

Re: Just bought a Shopsmith Mark V

Rambling is good, I seem to do it often. :D I got the 4 main parts ordered on SALE so I am happy about that. When they come in, I will take a hard look at the bearings and decide if I need to order new before installing or let them be. With the new drive sheave and Quill, run out should be very litt...

Re: Just bought a Shopsmith Mark V

I worry about bearings from the perspective where they are made. I trust not any china bearings, prefer Japan over them but Germany and others have really good bearings. Not knowing the brand that SS sells, it worries me, I don't want to buy them. We do a lot of work with automotive and 2 cycle smal...

Re: Just bought a Shopsmith Mark V

Just thinking out loud.... If you added a 2 bearing Quill and there was play in the splines and or drive bearings, you could still have wobble / run out?

Re: Just bought a Shopsmith Mark V

It is my understanding that Jacob Anderson has retired from servicing Shopsmith Tools. The Statement He actually says if you have a new front bearing on the quill and new bearings on the drive sleeve, the quill will be solid. That could be true, but it would require a very snug fit between the spli...
