Speed control clip?

I'm rebuilding a Shopsmith I bought in a box. The speed control is a bit mucked up from the speed control pullies becoming frozen to the shaft from linseed oil based lubes (red 3-in-1 is bad for your SS!). The little clip that secures the speed control shaft into the speed control housing was destro...

Quill issues, what am I doing wrong?

I'm reassembling a Shopsmith I bought completely un-assembled in a box. I can't get the quill to work correctly. Did I assemble it correctly? First picture is of the parts opened up to show orientation. Second picture is of the parts when everything is tightened up. Third picture is of the spherical...

Shorty ways tubes; how short did you cut them?

Just finishing up rebuilding a Mark V basket case (more literally a box case) and I'm fixing to cut down the way tubes.

How short did you cut them?

Re: First Time ShopSmith owner, machine in pieces

Post a picture of your motor pieces so we can figure out which one it is and if all the parts are there. If you're handy it's not too hard to replace bearings and re-assemble a motor.

Re: GE 1 1/8 motor bearings

Ha, ha, I know a guy who didn't see the little ears on the OEM snap-ring and bent it whilst pulling the bearing. He was able to find a suitable replacement at ACE. Don't ask me how I know this guy.....

Re: Rebuild questions for an 87 Mark V power head

I've had the power head since 1987 (30 years), I'd like to use it another 30 years when I'll be in my mid-80's. It's unlikely any single bearing will make it 60 years without needing replacing. There's only 7 or 8 bearings in a power head (depending on the quill and including the motor bearings). Wh...

Re: Making a "Shorty"

...band saw with the belt sander combined with the disc sander. Does the bandsaw and belt sander fit onto the 25 5/8" top tube length with factory couplers? I've got it mocked up and it looks a little tight or not fitting by ~1/2". Looking at your picture confirms my concern that it's tig...

Re: Rebuild questions for an 87 Mark V power head

Before I got to my original headstock I purchased a non-functioning 1980 unit off of CL. I decided to drop the motor, now that I have it's clear that's the way to go. While I'm inside I'm replacing all seven OEM shielded bearings with sealed bearings (single bearing quill). Can't repair the idler sh...

I used that exact diagram for my upgrade on my 1986 legset. My set-up works fine without the washers but I added them for even more ground clearance.
