You could also look into making a drum sander for thicknessing.

I would be more inclined to install the cotter pin turned 90 deg, so the ends wrap around the nut, rather than sticking out.

I am pretty sure that a hardwood dowel would work also. Put some wax or oil in the slot where the blade contacts.
