Dont really know, for sure, but looks like sap (pitch) to me. to test - break off some and light it with a match. If it burns well (as I suspect) you have found some fire starter material. Put it in a box and you now have a tinder box for your walks next winter. Some old timers would eat a small amo...

I agree with JPG. There will be no problem Wood movement on the 4" sides; it will be very,very small. Only if the cross has adapted to a rain forest atmosphere and then moved to the sierra, will you notice an issue with movement. And even then it will be quite small. The long sides - NO issue N...

I'm curious on what you find.to I was not able to get mine to align like the dvd showed with two ridges on each side. I just got it all the way to the right and it is pretty straight. I have been using it this way because I need to do some work hope it is not hurting the unit. Should not hurt anyth...

Hi Tom, Maybe the idler shaft needs to be adjusted a small amount to the left or right. I've found the double bearing can shift a small amount in the eccentric.

That's what I'd try.

Oh for "Peat's Sake" The gap allows open space for access to the locking set screw. If the measuring strip went all the way around, you would not be able to tighten the unit onto the pipe - unless you cut away a portion.

Curious about 220, but no need for any power issues. Would require installing 220 outlet. Some day I may switch, just to see what the difference would be, if any.
