I'll second on the importance of trimming the wood. A barrel trimmer is a good investment, but you CAN use your sanding disk and your table saw table to trim them also. I've seen it done by butting the wood blank up to the fence on a crosscut fence and pushing it into the sanding disk to sand the ex...

Bob, I experienced that a couple of times, especially with some of the softer woods. I found reducing the drill diameter helped, so did using a tail-stock center on the piece until I got close to the end of the shaping, and taking light cuts. Another thing I found that helps... I know someone that has an Epilog laser engraver and checkered a set of grips with that. I was amazed at how well it turned out. He made the checker design a grayscale image, and set the engraver so the darker the color, the deeper it would engrave. Doing this he actually got the tapered checkering ...
