One does not need to use dowels to make a cutting board or a table top. In fact, it is probably a waste of time and effort. As long as your edges are well jointed, glue is all you need. The carriage on my 500 is from an old Greenie, and it is threaded on the side facing the headstock for a stop bolt which does the same job the spacer ring does. Hi Midwest Preacher;

Here is a chart that gives serial numbers and approximate dates, but it does not seem to help with identifying the date of your machine. JPG is correct, more information and a picture or two would help.

Interesting idea! The hardware will be the critical part. That 'whitewood' resembles spruce. I agree...a VERY interesting idea.
