Finally got it figured out. the previous owner had obviously taken the locking mechanism apart and failed to put it back together properly. Even more odd, if I mount the lather rest on the wrong side it locks down pretty tight.

Hello all, just a pretty simple question for you today. When i mount my lathe rest the carriage lock does not want to lock very well. I seems okay with the table installed. I did pull the geared pieces out and cleaned them of any compacted sawdust and it helped a little bit. Am I missing something? ...
