Re: Sanding Walnut
Ambitious project! Couple of other thoughts on the end grain 1) might try a light touch with a cabinet scraper and 2) might try reversing the bowl by chucking it on the outboard spindle and sand in that direction.

Re: How to Sharpen Stanley 28 /29 Corner Rounding Tools?
Very clever idea to use the tools themselves to create the correct shape for the sharpening tool. Also, I am impressed with how clearly your photographs show the process and the results. Question: did you do anything to the inside of the cutting edges? I am guessing that a few strokes with the sandp...

I think you are on the right track with the sandpaper idea. I would definitely try that first. You might also look for a slip stone. I have an old hard arkansas slip with two different radii that works well for the concave inner surfaces of gouges and something like that could also work for your rou...

...or splurge on the Shopsmith 6" drum sander. Yes, I have used this technique. It definitely works. You want to take thin passes -- barely making contact between the drum and the stock. Even still, it makes piles/clouds of sawdust that the dust collector struggles to keep up with. It's been q...

You might also want to consider making your own duplicator. Lots of ideas on You Tube, but one of the best is an article in Issue 132 of Shop Notes magazine, which describes the complete build of a nice looking duplicator. It looks like it would work fine for your project. Just another possible opt...

Re: Which older Shopsmith as a lathe?
It has been suggested if you wanted to turn a bowl in reverse for sanding you could attach it to the left side of the Headstock on the upper Auxiliary shaft. Putting the Tailstock on the left end of the Mark V you could reverse the rotation of a spindle for sanding also if it is not too long. That ...
