This is what that flat spring looks like in position as shown in the picture below. It is the part under the arrow not what the arrow is pointing to. Sorry it's the only picture I could find of it right now.

Re: New Owner
That is a lot of wear on that Gilmer Drive Sleeve Assembly. I don't know why the belt would wear it down so much through normal use even considering its age. If the Bearings are not turning smoothly, they should be replaced. Poorly turning bearings will rob power between the motor and Quill. You may...

At $50 off this is probably the best deal you will find on the Speed Reducer from Shopsmith.

Re: Quill coupler broken - where to source new part?
danielsegge, Welcome to the Shopsmith Forum. As you may have guessed from the posts from other members it makes a difference which drive system your Shopsmith Mark 5 has. Mark 5 Greenies which started in 1954 through Goldies made prior to mid 1961 originally came with the Gilmer Drive while all Mark...

Re: How do you really feel about the term "Smart Motor"?
Thanks to all of you who have added their thoughts here so far. I would like to add to my opinion about the term "Smart Motor." Calling either the Conventional or Power Pro Headstock only "Smart Motor" tends to leave out the other functions and parts of either Headstock. The Quil...

Re: Which Lathe upgrade?
Ed,
You are correct about it being locked down to the Way Tubes but for drilling the lock could be released and help keep it in line. I know, it's not ideal, just another possible use for the Speed Reducer.

How do you really feel about the term "Smart Motor"?
For those wishing to comment on Shopsmith using the term 'Smart Motor" as opposed to the traditional term Headstock I started this topic. The Topic titled Smart Motor Speed Dial Ring, Back Up Spring part # 504196 seem to have been taken over by this discussion. The OP, tprowood, was simply aski...

Re: Which Lathe upgrade?
jcrusso, Welcome to the Shopsmith Forum. Both are good upgrades for Lathe Turning especially for larger items like bowl turning. The Speed Reducer does just as it says, slows it down to as low as 100 RPMs, a 7 to 1 reduction. That is something desirable with bowl and large turnings. It is a Shopsmit...
