Re: Planer Snipe
A lot of great advice. As a SS instructor years ago I used the planer almost every day. After sharp blades and an occasional tune-up the snipe was barely noticeable. I have used many different planers over the years as an instructor and the SS planer gave the smoothest surface and least amount of sn...

Re: Shopsmith snubbed!
You all have brought up an interesting topic for me since I was there when all the changes happened. There probably are not to many old Shopsmith employees around any more. I was just a couple years out of college when I helped open the Kansas city store it 1989. It was the 42nd store. There was not...

Re: I am new to all of this. Sure could use some advice.
Liz, That looks like a better deal. For $300 extra you are getting a lot more than the $800 machine. The only thing I don't see are the 3 ring owners binder which contains a section of lessons, and then the book "Power tool Woodworking for Everyone". The book is kind of everything you need...

Re: I am new to all of this. Sure could use some advice.
I have had a model 510 for 25+ years and it has been a great machine. One of the strengths of Shopsmith is how well dust collection works. Better than most stand alone machines. The other replies give you all the info you need and sounds like a good deal. I would recommend trying to find a woodworki...

Re: I Wonder Which Machines They Looked At
I am with Gene. The comparisons are interesting but I have been using SS products for 35 years too and have never been disappointed. Even if I could have all the space and choice of machines I would still include a MKV or now MKVII.

Re: Flexible Drum Sander (an option)
Those look like a good addition. I have had the SS pneumatic drum sander for about 25 years and really like that you can change the pressure or hardness of the drum.

Re: Can't Get Drill Chuck off 10e - Advice Please
I realize you got the chuck off already but I have another rust removal suggestion that works quite well. I learned this from an old auto mechanic years ago when I asked him what they used before penetrating oil. He said he still used ammonia as long as the area was dry and not contaminated with oth...

Re: Putting the Shopsmith to use in Lathe Configuration
That was a great question. If you have the standard 5 shopsmith chisels the wide gouge is for roughing and the narrow gouge is basically a spindle gouge. You could use it for shallow bowls but if you are just beginning I would use the round nose scraper for bowl insides. The shopsmith chisels are no...

Re: New toy for a new member
How exciting. I am new to the forum too but I'm a long time user and former Shopsmith accademy instructor. I remember the delivery and helping my dad unpack his new Mark v 500 in 1976 when I was just a kid. I have been woodworking ever since.
