Re: Shopsmith Drill Press Vise 556416 Dimension Questions

Thanks to all for your comments, suggestions, and dimensions. I chose the Wolfcraft 4" Vise from Rockler's. And, mounted it to a small sliding plywood jig I had made years ago, so as to get full range of drilling capability. I removed part of the wood strips that slide in miter gauge slots and ...

Shopsmith Drill Press Vise 556416 Dimension Questions

I needed to drill some 1/2" and 5/16" holes in small blocks of wood yesterday, and it took 4 clamps and 9 scraps of wood to hold the pieces securely while I drilled. This started me looking at drill press vises. I have a Mark V 500, so I don't have the T-slots at the miter gauge slots. But...

Re: What am I doing wrong?

Yes, more of a rotational positioner and not for vertical support. I think of it more as a guideline, as I find it fits my setup best when NOT in contact with the rubber spacer or the way tube. But, my setup is not typical ... I use a blade with 5/8" arbor most of the time, which is longer than...

The nut is left hand threads on that arbor. And the putty in the hole at the collar is intentional, to prevent accidentally loosening it when changing blades or other accessories.

Re: What am I doing wrong?

I don't think the saw guard should be rotated for the alignment pin to touch the way tube. The top of my lower guard is parallel to the tie bar with the pin away from the way tube (I am using my longer bolt instead of the alignment pin since I can't find my pin at the moment.) IIRC, the shorter pin ...

Re: What am I doing wrong?

2. Also, does the rubber gasket stopper go between the head stock and the lower saw guard or between the lower saw guard and the table (see pic 3 - which side of the vertical metal bar does the rubber thingy go on? ) I didn't see anyone else answer this question, so I'll try. I'm not 100% sure, but...

Glad to hear you've made progress.

For comparison, here is what my 1980 Mark V 500 with 1 1/8 h.p. motor sounds like:

Re: Mark V Model 500, Serial #321013 makes Bad metal-scraping noise.

The type of noise you described sounds like what I heard when my button bearing needed replacing. If it is the problem, yours may be too far gone to save, but lubricating the control sheave (thru hole seen in same picture) and allowing machine to stay in drill press position overnight will let oil s...

Good guess, but per Everett Davis' "Buying a used Shopsmith v2" document, date codes started in 1988 and are in mmddyyyy format.

I do not have the program to edit them into one document. Your hints have been very helpful to me on several occasions, so just want to share that I have found PDF24Creator to be easy to use and very helpful for all things related to PDFs. It is available as a free download. I have no other interes...
