Anyone got a decent worm gear and quadrant for sale?

Hi all, I've been investigating issues with my speed control and came to discover that my worm gear is bent at the point where the gear meets the shaft. I've wasted an afternoon trying to come up with a way to straighten it without messing up the threads, but have been totally unsuccessful so far. I...

Re: Quill return spring...

Uh..., no. Reinstalled it, gave it not even one twist and heard a snap. <sigh/> I took it back apart and this time the end snapped off, so I guess this time I have to take it out and try to put new holes in it. I'm pretty sure that's already been discussed in this thread, so I'll review it again and...

Re: Quill return spring...

Heh, I think I got it. I was testing it and tried to take it back off and now it's not even coming off. ;-)

Thanks, guys.

Re: Quill return spring...

Hi all, I hope it's OK that I'm bumping this thread instead of a new one. I thought it would be best to keep the information together. I'm in the process of reassembling my headstock, so the thing has been completely apart. I reinstalled the quill feed pinion and associated parts, followed by the dr...

Re: Difficulty getting to quill bearing

Hi guys, I wanted to give you an update on my situation. I have a friend that I know through my local AACA chapter, who is the shop foreman at my local Ford dealership. So I showed it to him and he said, "Sure, I can get that off. Bring it by tomorrow and we'll use our 25 Ton press." ;-) S...

Re: Difficulty getting to quill bearing

Hi guys, Yea, I was pretty upset with myself for being so dumb. I tried using my impact wrench to turn the bearing extractor with the thought that the impact motion might break lose whatever was holding that piece onto the shaft. But what happened instead, was that the end of the extractor screw mar...

Re: Difficulty getting to quill bearing

Well, all I've achieved so far is about 1/32" of movement, but that just cost me damage to the screw at the end of the quill. It doesn't look easily fixable. So, what are the costs and modifications required to upgrade to a two bearing quill? If I've got to replace it, it makes sense to get the...

Re: Difficulty getting to quill bearing

Hi guys, Yea, everything is removed from the headstock -- the quill and the lathe drive. Good note about the knurled collar. I didn't know that they were that rare, so I'll definitely heed that advice! Good idea to try using gravity too. I've been putting PB Blaster between the collar and the frozen...

Re: Difficulty getting to quill bearing

Hi Ben, Yea, I tried using the bearing puller that he recommended, but it started to bend the bolt between the two halves that fit behind the bearing, so I stopped. Drowning it in Evaporust is a really good idea. I've been regularly coating it with PB Blaster throughout the day today and if that doe...

Re: Difficulty getting to quill bearing

Hi JPG, The two set screws are not aligned because the serrated piece is spinning freely after loosening the screw. So hopefully the quill isn't scored, but obviously I won't know for sure until the darned thing is off. I guess I'm going to try the penetrating fluid first and see what that gets me, ...
