After having successfully turned 5 or 6 of the pistons on the metal lathe, I will only add that either, like you alluded to, they are not for the purpose suggested, or, they were to compensate for a change in availability of stem length, like was also mentioned. I have just about got a full solution...

Make a simple frame and staple plastic sheet to it. make it removable and you can get seeds started pretty early. I did it with earthboxes years ago, but the same thing here. Have fun!

That is very creative and looks like it certainly would protect the area under the table. I have thought about making one out of wood. Just no motivation with so many projects to do.

I made a toilet paper roller to specifically fit some commercial rolls that I abandoned from my businesses (I knew if I kept them it would pay off! :) )
