Re: Control Sheave
Ed, I can't remember if the idler shaft is the same diameter from the hub end to the Control Sheave end. I have been wondering that since my post the other day. I'll check it later on. The idler shaft is actually the shaft of a water pump bearing. Probably the same one used on the bandsaw and strip...

Re: Heads Up - Bargain 'available'
Not much detail, but for $125.. https://providence.craigslist.org/tls/d/west-greenwich-shop-smith/7352834673.html I missed an alert on that one because he spelled it as two words Shop Smith. If he still has it and the motor works I'll try to pick it up today. It's half way across the state but I th...

Re: Control Sheave
The measurements in your drawing are correct. The diameter of the sheave is 5 1/2". The control sheave shaft inner diameter is 3/4", as is the outer diameter of the button bearing. The inner diameter of the button bearing is 3/16", as is the diameter of the round button post. Since th...

Re: Scraps project - suggestions
Yeah, cutting boards and chess/checker boards are the natural for this. Maybe even a backgammon board. You can make a cutting board with a 3D pattern or other exotic pattern. All those require gluing up a lot of small pieces. Some people manage to clamp them all up at once in a frame. I think I'd ha...

Re: Control Sheave
My son helped me get the motor sheaves off. A little tight at first but they weren't frozen. I'll take the measurements when I can, been a long day for me already.

Re: Scraps project - suggestions
And I still intend to do it some day.I'm gonna take all these scraps, glue them together, and do some really nice turning on my Shopsmith lathe.[Ed from New York circa 1994]

Re: Control Sheave
Ok, looked in the parts case and found two sets of control sheaves and no motor sheaves because (slap myself upside the head) they're still on the motors. Got a motor out, later on my son will help me pull the sheaves. I'm slightly disabled right now so need help with almost anything. I'll punch out...

Re: Control Sheave
I have at least two of those sitting in the parts bin. I can't do it today but I'll dig one up tomorrow. I can take measurements, or if you really want it in your hands I'll send it to you.

Re: Speed shaft
Clear enough explanation. You need to understand how split sheaves (adjustable pulleys) work in the first place to understand any explanation of this. This video of a mechanism very similar to the Shopsmith illustrates how the effective pitch diameter of the pulleys changes as the two halves of the ...
