Re: Using a Shop Smith Mark V on a Chris Craft Roamer refit
Thanks guys! Things went well, but there was a problem with a diesel leak I discovered while shutting down at my new home port. It ended up being a simple fix (loose injector nut) but it's another example of what appears to be shoddy workmanship by guys other than me who touched the engines/boat. I ...

Re: Using a Shop Smith Mark V on a Chris Craft Roamer refit
We made the transit from Deale to Port Tobacco, MD, yesterday. 108 miles in 7 hours 45 minutes, from cast off to tie off, with two hours of idling at 6 kts through snotty Chesapeake yaya at the Patuxent River confluence. The rest of the time we were cruising at ~15.5 kts @ ~1850 RPM. This is the fir...

Re: Using a Shop Smith Mark V on a Chris Craft Roamer refit
Thanks, nuhobby! Before I take any more trips, I wanted to get a depth sounder head unit installed while I waited for the new seacock. I've had the "new" transponder installed since 2009...only used once! While I was in the helm wiring chase, I decided to remove the rat's nest of wires for...

Re: Using a Shop Smith Mark V on a Chris Craft Roamer refit
Thanks guys! David, the engines perform absolutely flawlessly now. I'm more inclined to think that the shutdown was just an air bubble in the injection pump, and that the no-restart problem was unrelated. The engines light off so fast now, it's amazing. The missus was onboard today getting ready for...

Re: Using a Shop Smith Mark V on a Chris Craft Roamer refit
Thanks, BuckeyeDennis! I covered the swim platform access back in 2014: 1969 Chris Craft Roamer 46 Refit: Installing the Transom Steps The Chris Craft Roamer 46 Refit Article Index is a good way to find articles of interest. They're all in chronological order, so 1969 Chris Craft Roamer 46: The Refi...

Re: Using a Shop Smith Mark V on a Chris Craft Roamer refit
My 1969 Chris Craft Roamer 46 is floating in Rock Creek, MD, after a successful splash with a nearly dry bilge, followed by an idle speed maiden voyage out to the Herring Bay jetty and back! Oh...and the loose starter bolt problem ended up not being the actual problem. It was voodoo, man! 1969 Chris...

Re: Using a Shop Smith Mark V on a Chris Craft Roamer refit
Drumroll please...the starboard engine LIVES! I went through all of the electrics and found nothing wrong. Just as I was beginning to dread the thought of having to pull the starter, I noticed something funny with one of the starter bolts. Turns out it was finger-tight! The mechanic who sold me the ...

Re: Using a Shop Smith Mark V on a Chris Craft Roamer refit
That's a fair theory. But I have the batteries all paralleled together, and I started and ran the port engine after the starboard problems manifested. It seems unlikely to be a battery problem.
But I'm going through the electrical system today, from key switch to the starter.
Stay tuned...

Re: Using a Shop Smith Mark V on a Chris Craft Roamer refit
Hi David. The video I posted at the linked blog article is instructive about pretty much everything. It shows exactly what happened on splash day in the engine room and answers several of your questions. As for the crank turning when I'm barring over the alternator bolt, I'm right there watching the...
